Typically, Elemental Analysis is undertaken for the purpose of heavy metal screening in raw materials, and the accurate determination of trace quantities in finished products. Reliable quantitative analysis in the presence of interfering background components can be problematic for trace level determinations.

Australia: PharmaMail #13 - USP: Heavy Metals by ICP-OES and ICP-MS

Two new chapters in the US Pharmacopoeia, ‘USP 232 Elemental Impurities – Limits’ and ‘USP 233 Elemental Impurities – Procedure’ propose that testing for heavy metals in pharmaceutical products can now be performed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS).

Australia: ALS Acquires EML Pty Ltd

On Wednesday 1 June 2011 ALS completed the acquisition of EML Pty
Ltd, with operations in Sydney (Rydalmere) and Melbourne (Surrey
Hills). ALS did not acquire other businesses carrying the EML name –
EML (Air), EML (Chem) and EML Queensland Operations.

Europe: Dioxin Capabilities in Food and Feed

ALS offers ideal conditions fulfilling Commission Regulation 1881/2006 amended and 2002/70/EC amended for food/feed quality monitoring. The European Union, in its Commission Directive 2006/13/EC for animal feeds, Commission Regulation 199/2006 for food and Recommendation 2006/88/EC for feed and food, sets maximum acceptable levels and action levels.

Australia: PharmaMail #12 - Stability Requirements

Effective 1 July 2010 the TGA adopted the PIC/S Guide to Good Manufacturing Practice (15 January 2009, PE 009-8) as the current GMP code. A significant change for manufacturers of medicinal products in the new code is the requirement to have detailed procedures on stability testing and annual product quality reviews (PQR).
